How to Become an RBT in 2026 (Step by Step)

Eligibility: what you need before you start

You need to be at least 18, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and pass a criminal background check administered through the BACB's background check system. There's no degree requirement — the RBT credential is specifically designed as an entry point into ABA work, not a role that assumes prior coursework.

Step 1: Complete the 40-hour training

The training covers the RBT Task List 3rd Edition domains — data collection, assisting with assessment, teaching procedures, behavior reduction, documentation and ethics — and must be delivered by a qualifying instructor. It can be completed online, in person or in a hybrid format, and most programs let you work at your own pace within a set window.

Step 2: Find a supervisor and pass the Initial Competency Assessment

Before you can sit the exam, a qualified assessor — a BCBA, BCaBA or BCBA-D who has completed the BACB's 8-hour supervision training — has to watch you perform a set of tasks with a client or in a role-play and confirm you did them competently. As of 2026 the initial assessment covers 19 specific tasks.

The assessor, you, and the organization you're both connected to all have to be the same entity providing services to the client involved — an assessor unconnected to where you'll actually work can't sign off on it.

Step 3: Apply to the BACB and schedule at Pearson VUE

Once your training and competency assessment are done, your supervisor or organization submits your RBT application to the BACB. Approval gives you a one-year authorization window to sit the exam, which you schedule directly with Pearson VUE at a testing center.

Step 4: Pass the exam

85 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes, delivered at a Pearson VUE test center. 75 of the 85 are scored; the other 10 are unscored pilot items you can't distinguish from the real ones while testing. You'll usually see an unofficial result on screen right after finishing, with an official result posted to your BACB account shortly after.

After you pass: renewal going forward

RBT certification isn't a one-time credential — it has to be maintained. Through 2026, most RBTs complete a Renewal Competency Assessment as part of their annual recertification. The BACB is transitioning to a two-year recertification cycle built around 12 professional development units instead of a yearly hands-on assessment, starting with RBTs who recertify in 2026 — check your own BACB account for which cycle applies to you, since the timing depends on your specific recertification date.

Whichever cycle you're on, an expired credential means you can't practise as an RBT until it's reinstated, so track your renewal date the same way you'd track any other license.
