The RBT exam format, and what changed in 2026

The RBT examination is 85 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes at Pearson VUE. 75 questions are scored; the remaining 10 are unscored pilot items. Since 1 January 2026 the exam has been built on the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd Edition), which renamed four of the six domains and grew the task list from 37 to 43 items.

The real exam delivers 85 questions in 90 minutes: 75 scored plus 10 unscored pilot questions that do not count toward your result.

RBT exam questions, answered

How many questions are on the RBT exam?
The RBT exam delivers 85 multiple-choice questions. Only 75 of them are scored — the other 10 are unscored pilot questions the BACB is trialling for future exams, and you cannot tell which is which while you are testing. You get 90 minutes for all 85, which works out to roughly 63 seconds per question.
What score do you need to pass the RBT exam?
There is no fixed percentage. The BACB uses scaled scoring, which converts your raw score to a scaled score to account for small differences in difficulty between exam forms, and it does not publish a percentage pass mark. Many candidates use 80% on full-length practice exams as a personal readiness benchmark, but that is a study target people set for themselves — not the pass mark, and no practice site can tell you the number you need.
How long is the RBT exam?
You have 90 minutes to answer all 85 questions. The appointment itself runs longer because of check-in, ID verification and the tutorial at the testing centre, so allow extra time. Pace matters more than most candidates expect: 90 minutes for 85 questions is about 63 seconds each, which is why our exams run a real countdown clock.
What is the RBT Task List 3rd Edition, and what changed?
The BACB replaced the RBT Task List 2nd Edition with the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd Edition), effective for exams from 1 January 2026. Four of the six domain names changed — Measurement became Data Collection and Graphing, Skill Acquisition became Behavior Acquisition, Assessment became Behavior Assessment, and Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice became Ethics. The task count grew from 37 to 43, with new emphasis on data accuracy and on cultural humility. The weighting shifted too: the old Skill Acquisition domain was around 32% of the exam, while Behavior Acquisition is about 25%.
Are these practice questions the real RBT exam questions?
No, and you should be sceptical of any site that claims otherwise. Real exam items are secure and copyrighted, and reproducing them would be both illegal and a violation of the BACB Ethics Code. Every question here is original, written independently against the publicly published RBT Test Content Outline (3rd Edition), and matched to the same domain weighting and question format as the real exam.
How much does the RBT exam cost?
You pay the BACB an application fee and Pearson VUE a separate exam appointment fee. Together these are typically in the region of $100–$150 in the United States, but the amounts change and vary by country, so check the current figures on the BACB website before you budget. Retake appointments carry the appointment fee again.
When do I get my RBT exam results?
Most candidates see an unofficial pass or fail result on screen at the testing centre immediately after finishing, with the official result posted to their BACB account shortly afterward. If you do not pass, the official report includes a breakdown by content area, which tells you where to concentrate your studying before you retake.
What happens if I fail the RBT exam?
You can retake it. The BACB requires a waiting period between attempts — commonly reported as seven days — and limits how many attempts you may make within your authorisation window before you must reapply. You pay the appointment fee again for each attempt. Use the content-area breakdown on your score report to target your revision rather than restudying everything.
How many times can I take the RBT exam?
The BACB sets a limit on attempts within a single authorisation period, after which you must submit a new application and, in some cases, repeat parts of the eligibility requirements. Because the specific limits and waiting periods are updated periodically, confirm the current rules in the RBT Handbook on the BACB website rather than relying on any third-party summary, including this one.
What is the difference between the RBT competency assessment and the RBT exam?
They are two separate requirements. The Initial Competency Assessment is conducted in person by a qualified assessor who watches you perform tasks with a client or a role-play participant, and it must be completed before you can sit the exam. The exam itself is a written multiple-choice test taken at a Pearson VUE centre. Passing one does not substitute for the other, and both must be completed for certification.
What do I need to bring to the Pearson VUE testing centre?
Bring valid, unexpired government-issued photo identification with your name matching your BACB account exactly. Personal items including phones, watches and bags go into a locker before you enter. Arrive early — Pearson VUE typically asks candidates to check in around 30 minutes before the appointment, and late arrivals may forfeit the appointment and the fee.
Do free RBT practice exams actually help?
They help most when they do two things: match the real domain weighting, so you are not over-practising one area, and explain why each wrong option is wrong, so a missed question teaches you something. Practice questions that only tell you the right answer train recognition rather than understanding. Taking at least one full-length attempt under a real 90-minute clock is also worth doing, because running out of time is a distinct problem from not knowing the content.
How should I use this site to prepare?
Take one full-length exam in Exam Mode first to get a baseline and a per-domain breakdown. Use the weakest-domain result to pick a section quiz and the matching study guide section, work through those, then take a different full-length version. Repeating that loop is more effective than taking the same exam repeatedly, which measures memory of the questions rather than knowledge of the content.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no email wall and no paywall anywhere on this site. Your answers, flags and timer are saved in your own browser using localStorage, so you can close the tab mid-exam and pick up where you left off — nothing is uploaded to us.
